WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REGULAR MASSAGE AND A HOLISTIC MASSAGE?

All massage techniques involve some form of physical manipulation, through the rubbing and working of muscles and tendons to achieve the result of optimal health and wellbeing. A holistic massage, however, goes beyond physical manipulation by also focusing on how a client is feeling on a personal level. The term ‘holistic’ comes from the Greek word ‘holos’, meaning whole. Holistic massage aims to treat the whole person – body, mind and soul. Another key difference is that holistic massages are completely tailored to each individual, meaning no two massages are the same! This flexibility means that our massage therapist will work on areas of your body that need it most, rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY TREATMENT?

We recommend the following tips to help you get the most out of your massage therapy sessions with us.

Stay Hydrated

It is important to be well hydrated before and after your massage session as this helps flush out the toxins that are released into the body’s circulation during the treatment. Drinking water or herbal teas are great ways to stay hydrated. Try to avoid drinking regular tea, coffee, alcohol, or any other stimulants.

Wear Loose or Comfortable Clothing

Plan to wear loose comfortable clothing as this will help put you in a relaxed state. During your session you will be asked to undress, to your comfort level, for your massage. After the massage you may feel tender, or just extremely relaxed, so you might appreciate not having to put on restrictive clothing back on.

Don't be Afraid to Communicate your Needs

Before your massage, we will carry out a consultation. Use this as an opportunity to tell us everything you would like us to know: your preferences, needs, expectations, sensitivities, and so on. Let us know if you have a specific problem area or if you just want to relax during the session. Feel free to let us know how much pressure you would like, or even tell us what you don't enjoy. We are here to help you feel better, after all!

Relax During the Massage

The most important thing is to relax! It is not uncommon for people to hold or limit their breath during a massage because they feel nervous. This can, in fact, be counterproductive. On the other hand, taking deep long breaths during your treatment may help reduce stress and chase away any negative thoughts. And remember, communication doesn't stop at your consultation. At any point during your massage, you can let us know your preferences or if you feel uncomfortable. Too hot, too cold; more or less pressure; bright or low lighting; loud or low music; with or without essential oils etc. This is your massage and your time to relax—you decide!

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST SESSION?

To be able to create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and physical characteristics, the first stage will involve discussing your aims and goals for these massage therapy sessions. During your consultation, you may be asked about your current state of physical and emotional health, your diet, your work schedule and your sleeping habits. With your consent, you might also be asked to discuss your medical history to help identify specific pain points in your body so we can work together to find out possible causes for your discomfort. This may seem like a lot of information to relay to a massage therapist, but the more you communicate your needs, the better we will be able to respond to them.

WILL I BE REQUIRED TO FULLY UNDRESS?

No, you will not need to completely remove all of your clothing for any of our treatments. Before your massage our therapist will ask you to undress to your level of comfort, down to your (bottom half) underwear. If you normally wear a bra, you may keep this on during the session if it makes you feel more comfortable. However, many prefer to remove their bras to allow the massage therapist to work on the back and shoulder area without getting massage oil or lotion on the bra. Our therapist will leave the room to give you the privacy you need to undress. Take as much time as you need, and don’t worry, our therapist will make sure you are properly covered by a towel or sheet throughout your session.
